8K Association Launches TV Certification Program

The 8K Association’s stated mission is to “grow appreciation and awareness of 8K products which will provide an even higher level of enjoyment which is paramount to large screen entertainment.” The association currently comprises 22 member companies, including five of the world’s leading panel manufacturers, which together represented more 70% of global TV-panel manufacturing capacity in 2019. Membership also includes technology providers and companies that create and distribute content. TV/video members include Samsung, Panasonic, Hisense, TCL, and IMAX.

Covering parameters for 8K input (bit depth, frame rate, chroma sub-sampling), display performance (resolution, peak brightness, black level, color gamut, white point), interface, and media formats, the new technical specification is built around HDMI 2.1 and the HEVC (high efficiency video coding) codec and specifies a resolution of 7,680 x 4,320 (or 33 million) pixels, which is four times that of the 4K Ultra HD standard; input frame rates of 24p, 30p, and 60p frames per second (fps); and display luminance that exceeds 600 nits peak luminance. ”

Samsung shipped the first 8K TV in Korea last fall and sells its Q900 Series QLED 8K TVs in the U.S. in screen sizes ranging from 55 inches ($3,000) to 98 inches ($70,000).
The company has taken an aggressive stance with plans to maximize 8K sales through “close cooperation with retail partners and cementing the 8K leadership by positioning QLED 8K TVs as mainstream TVs,” according to the company’s second quarter 2019 earnings statement.
